THE SCALE OF THE UNIVERSE

Recently we had the transit of Venus which was a pretty rare event and I came across this really cool site that made me wonder about the universe and all the different size of things.  Have a go but take care you don’t zoom too fast.  If you click on the objects there is a small note with a description.

The Scale of the Universe

The Scale in simple version

On Wednesday 6th June you might have noticed some students and staff from the LRC hanging outside very early in the morning holding 2 pieces of paper.  Ms Stajcar came to help out later with some better looking cardboard.  If you wondered why we there we were trying to capture the transit of Venus crossing the face of the sun.  If you want to find out more about the Transit of Venus try this site.

Year 7 – WEBSITE EVALUATION

Do Tree Octopuses exist?

Look at this video:

Tree Octopus Attack

There is a blog with detailed information about the tree octopus but you can only see it at home as it does not work with our school filter.

Have a look at the following criteria:

Kathy Schrock’s Five W’s of Website Evaluation

Now use the criteria to evaluate the following websites:

The Faked Appollo Landing

Feline Reactions to Bearded Men

Burmese Mountain Dog

Year 8 – PLAGIARISM

Today our main focus is plagiarism.

What is it?  How do we avoid it?  Go on this site and work through the questions.

Vaughan Memorial Plagiarism Tutorial

 Task:

Find a sentence in a Newsbank article or a book.

Quote directly using ”  ” quotation marks.

Now paraphrase and put the idea into your own words.

Don’t worry about citing or referencing accurately, we will focus on that skill in the next Information Literacy Session.
